Free Butterfly Pattern

It's interesting when a project is started especially if its freehand it might not always turn out the way you think. This was supposed to be a flower and it sort of morphed into a butterfly.

The headband is an easy shell pattern and I added a crocheted butterfly to give it some personality.

Free 3-D Butterfly Pattern
Materials Used
Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver 100% acrylic
Crochet Hook: Size J (adjust depending on desired size of butterfly)

Ch 3 - magic ring, ch 5 (counts as sc and edge of wing).

Rnd 1: sc in ring, *ch 5, sc in ring, rep from * to make 4 (5-ch loops) ending sl st in 1st sc to join. (4 times)

Rnd 2: In 1st 5-ch loop make (sc, 2 hdc, 7 dc, 2 hdc, sc) and make the same for all remaining 3-ch loops, ending the last rep with sl st in 1st sc to join. (4 times)

Rnd 3: move to work behind Rnd 1, on back side slip st around connecting post of sc (place crochet hook through open hole and wrap the sl st around post to come up in the back)  chain 7 repeat around to make 4 parts to the 2 wings that line up with previous row. (4 times)

Rnd 4: in 1st 7-ch loop make (sc, 2 hdc, 9 dc, 2 hdc, sc) and make the same for all remaining 7-ch loops, ending the last rep with sl st in 1st sc to join. Do not fasten off. (4 times)

Antenna: *Ch 9, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, sl st in next ch until you reach the top of the butterfly* 1 antenna created. Repeat from * to create 2nd antenna. (2 times)

 Fasten off with a long tail for sewing. Tie tail and starting chain to tighten magic ring to adjust center of butterfly to liking. The looser the magic ring the more open the the base of the butterfly will be.

"Tangled" Hair

This hat took more yarn and time than I had expected. I was looking for something to make and decided to do something bold yet pretty.

My daughter loves Tangled the movie and is growing her hair out. Since sheis so tiny the Tangled hair we purchased at the Disney store is too big and rather heavy. I figured yarn would be great to make Tangled Hair out of since they made the Cabbage Patch Dolls with yarn hair for quite sometime. This is what we ended up with.

Hello Kitty Crochet Hat

This is my daughter's Hello Kitty hat. She loves it not to mention everyone else who sees it. It turned out better than I had expected. I hate to sew, but this was actually pretty simple once I got started.

Butterfly Beanie

This is my daughter modeling the lovely butterfly hat that my mother made. My three year old daughter has an extremely large head so we had to adjust the pattern slightly so it would fit properly.

I also made a few. The butterfly portion of this hat is so simple and looks awesome! I am not a fan of variegated yarn simply because it's never exact. It is just part of my OCD personality.

I prefer this particular pattern in the solid colors. We did winter white, burgundy, and a gorgeous teal deep blue color. It's an easy hat when you are in a hurry. Also it's much easier to carry than the Hello Kitty hat or Tangled hat when she doesn't want to wear it and we are out.

We added an extra row to adjust for my daughters large head. I also used Simply Soft Yarn. I crocheted a grey one with two strands and we actually like it better. It is thicker and fits better.

Spider-Man Super Hero Beanie

This was created for a first grader for Christmas. I hate sewing so this was not my favorite thing I've made. It took me longer to sew the web than it did to make the hat. I actually had to take out the web a few times. I am learning that the tighter you sew things it can actually change the shape of your item.

My tension deformed the hat so much it didn't even fit my three year old even though her heads incredibly large for her age. I somehow pulled so tightly on the yarn I shrank the hat. You could tell from the inside. It looked horrible. I'm big on presentation. I've learned sewing on crocheted items is much easier than knitted items.

The last part, the eyes. I made the eyes three times before I was satisfied. The hard part again was sewing them to the hat. Most patterns have you sew the eyes on before the spider-web but as you can see I did not. I felt like it looked better with the web done first and was more realistic of a true web. Plus it was easier. I decided to make the eyes super large and wide rather than big and oval with the spiderweb in the background. It sort of gives it an angry rawr look.

Knitted Buddy

This was supposed to be a knitted bear. However every pattern I found seemed too complicated and required a lot of sewing. You will soon learn I hate to sew. So I recreated something knitted in the round so I wouldn't have to sew it together except it looks more like a mouse than a bear.

This is by far my absolute favorite item I have made for my daughter. Perhaps more so because she loves it and still sleeps with it today.
